Coming Up This Week in the FAVC

This week we embark on the first of our final FAVC Winter Sports Championships as we hold our 15th Boys/Girls Swimming and Diving Championships (see related article on this page). The following two weekends will feature the FAVC Wrestling Championships for the West Division on Saturday, Feb. 4th and Saturday, Feb. 11th for the East Division. The races in girls’/boys’ bowling and basketball are going down to the wire. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up this week in the FAVC:

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

With three weeks remaining both races are extremely tight. WILMINGTON (10-1) leads the East by 1.5 games over MILFORD (8-2), by 2.5 games over TURPIN (7-3) in the East Division. The Hurricanes have remaining at home the next two Wednesdays against GLEN ESTE (4-7, 6th place) and LOVELAND (2-7,7th place), before closing out their final three games on the road at WALNUT HILLS (1-9, T8th place), LITTLE MIAMI (1-9, T8th place) and TURPIN.

In the West Division WINTON WOODS and TALAWANDA (8-1) hold a two game lead over MT. HEALTHY, who tagged the Warriors with their first loss of the year on Saturday and HARRISON (6-3). The Warriors close out their season with a home game against the co-leading Braves this Wednesday and then on the road at HARRISON, NORWOOD (1-8, 7th place) and NORTHWEST (0-9, 8th place) and a home game with EDGEWOOD (5-4, 5th place). The Braves in addition to the road game with WINTON WOODS is at home against EDGEWOOD, HARRISON, MT. HEALTHY and then finish on the road at ROSS (2-7, 6th place).

Sat. Jan. 28th: In the East Division: WALNUT HILLS @ LOVELAND, TURPIN @ KINGS, and MILFORD @ GLEN ESTE.

In the West Division: NORTHWEST @ MT. HEALTHY, EDGEWOOD @ TALAWANDA and NORWOOD @ ROSS.

In non-conference play: Withrow @ WINTON WOODS and ANDERSON @ Seton.

BOYS BASKETBALL

The current divisional leaders are: WALNUT HILLS (8-1) holding a half game lead over TURPIN (7-1) in the East and WINTON WOODS (6-0) holding a half game lead over ROSS (5-1).

Sat. Jan. 28th: LITTLE MIAMI will be in the Middletown Invitational; NORWOOD will be in the Finneytown and Lakota West will be at HARRISON for a dual match.

Milford Announces Its Hall of Fame

The Milford High School Athletic Department and the Milford Athletic Boosters Club are pleased to announce the Milford Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee Class of 2011. Four individuals have been chosen by the Hall of Fame committee. They are:

Ø Don Andriot, Class of 1977 (Football, Basketball and Track)

Ø Jim Terrell, Class of 1983 (Cross Country, Wrestling, Olympic Canoeing)

Ø Joel Peschke, Class of 1991 (Football and Basketball)

Ø Dave Niemeyer, Coach (Cross Country, Wrestling, Track and Basketball)

Hall of Fame night is scheduled for Friday, February 3, 2012. Festivities will include a pre-induction reception and dinner for the new inductees, their families, friends and the current members of the Milford Hall of Fame. Induction ceremonies will be in the Fley Center Gymnasium prior to the Milford men’s varsity basketball game versus Glen Este (approximately 7:00 pm).

FAVC Boys/Girls Swimming and Diving Championships This Saturday

The 15th and final FAVC Swimming Championships will be held at Miami University on Saturday, Jan. 28th. The Championships will begin at 3:00 p.m. Let’s take a look at the returning individual Champions in the field.

A look back at the 2011 FAVC Swim and Diving Championships

The TURPIN Spartans and the TALAWANDA Braves sweep their respective divisions for both the Boys and Girls in the 14th annual FAVC Swimming and Diving Championships this past Thursday (diving at Milford H.S.) and Saturday (swimming on the campus of Miami University). The Spartan Girls have won an FAVC and/or divisional title in 10 out of the past 11 years. The Spartan Boys have now won an FAVC and/or divisional title for the 9th consecutive year. TALAWANDA is now in its fifth year in the FAVC and the Boys and Girls teams have each won the divisional title every year.

NEW RECORDS

Girls’ 200 Yard Medley Relay: TURPIN (1:50.93): Molly Hazelbaker, Gabbie Pettinichi, Morgan Contino, and Valerie Borger. Old record, 1:52.63 set in 2009.

Boys’ 200 Yard IM: Steven Zimmerman of LITTLE MIAMI (1:53.64) shatters his own record by nearly 4 seconds 1:57.25 that he set in 2009.

Girls 50 Yard Freestyle: Rachael Lewis of WILMINGTON (:24.27) and Valerie Borger (:24.51) each broke the 2009 record of :24.63 set in 2009 by Julia Comodeca of ANDERSON.

Boys’ 50 Yard Freestyle: Austin Caldwell of LOVELAND (:21.37) and Alex Hutchison of HARRISON (:21.74) each broke the 2004 record of Mason’s Jeff Smith (:21.78).

Girls’ 1 Meter Diving: Margaret Craycraft breaks the 3rd longest standing FAVC record by scoring 241.65 to break Sarah Wyant of ROSS 2003 record of 234.55.

Boys’ 100 Freestyle: Austin Caldwell (:46.88) of LOVELAND, Wade Paroz (:47.30) of ANDERSON and Tommy Easley (47.91) of TURPIN all broke the 2008 record of Andrew Spurling (:48.31) of TURPIN.

Girls’ 200 Freestyle Relay: TURPIN (1:41.33) Morgan Contino, Jaymie Polet, Molly Hazelbaker and Valerie Borger broke the 2009 record of TURPIN (1:41.36).

Boys’ 200 Freestyle Relay: ANDERSON (1:29.19) Connor Davis, Jimmy Nordloh, Kile Aukerman, and Wade Paroz broke the 2009 record of LOVELAND (1:30.27).

Boys’ 100 Yard Backstroke: Steven Zimmerman LITTLE MIAMI (:51.23) breaks his own record from the 2009 meet (:52.68).

Boys’ 400 Yard Freestyle Relay: TURPIN (3:17.65) Tommy Easley, Philip Englert, Alex Kenney and Sean Monahan and ANDERSON (3:18.32) Connor Davis, Jared Springman, Kile Aukerman, and Wade Paroz broke the 2006 record of TURPIN (3:18.33).

In the individual events, the fastest 32 swimmers in the event will advance to the District meet. However, each sectional site (Centerville, Keating, Mason, and Trotwood) will advance two (2) automatic qualifiers. Any automatic qualifier not in the top 32 will be added at the end in open lanes.

For relay events, the fastest 24 relay teams in the event will advance to the District meet. However, each site (Centerville, Keating, Mason, and Trotwood) will advance two (2) automatic qualifiers. Any automatic qualifier not in the top 24 will be added at the end in open lanes.

In Boys Division I Diving, divers from the Keating, Mason, and combined Centerville/Trotwood sites will each qualify two (2) divers for a total of six (6) automatic qualifiers. Relay team members may be changed from the Sectional to District to State Tournaments providing the swimmers are on the schools tournament eligibility list and will not have participated in more events than permitted by the Federation Rules.

National Federation Swimming/Diving Rule stipulates that a team consist of one (1) or more competitors. Therefore, any school entering individuals in the Swimming/Diving Tournament is eligible for team point scoring.
